I'm not even kidding you, I have turned down going skiing (touring) because I don't have, time to make, or don't have the proper food, to take with me.
You learn something about your body each and every time you spend a day in the mountains.
GU's give me acid reflux,
I have to eat every 90 minutes,
Not wearing sunglasses gives me a migraine,
I absolutely will not eat a sandwich if I pack one.
The last one resinated with me after a longer tour last year. I couldn't keep up with my partners, I bonked, I bonked again, I got frustrated, I got cold. God dammnit, why did I pack a sandwich to carry to the top of this couloir and then right back to the car?
So I've learned. And just knowing I have food with me that I want to eat has helped me stay positive and moving when I feel low energy. My go-to's? Pasta, risotto, fried chicken and pizza. It sounds weird, but it really truly helps!
I recently went into Grand Teton National Park with Brady and our friend Matt with the objective to ski Turkey Shoot, a classic easily accessible couloir at the top of 25-Short to get snow beta and then skin back up west on the north wall to check out Chuter Buck.
Skiing with boys is, well like doing anything with boys, a game of catch up. We managed to make the classic 25-short mistake early-on and skin around and then up, missing our first right hand turn. Adding an extra hour to the day, the boys felt frustrated - I slogged along in the back of the pack, snacking and trying to lighten the mood by calling to boys "Nancy's" and giggling to myself.
By the time we made it to the top of Turkey Shoot I was so excited to pull a container of Carbonara (recipe coming soon) out of my pack I shoved a massive spork-full into Matt's face, that lightened the "missed-the-right-turn" mood.
Really the rest of the story is history as the skiing was great, my caloric in-take was right on and hanger wasn't even close to a question.
Gentlemen - if you've learned anything from this - it's all you really need is some real damn food and your girlfriends hanger will be solved. Brady thanks me for this self-recognition.
Happy eating friends!
